Exhibition Statment

Greg Oakley’s Homage To The Bird is a contemporary take on the historic and iconic bird illustrators of the mid-19th Century, especially John & Elizabeth Gould and John James Audubon.

He explores the space between the hyper-realistic, high-resolution digital photography of the 21st Century and the idealism of the beautiful hand-drawn lithograph prints of the 19th Century. He takes hundreds of individual photographs and combines them into a single image in which the bird is removed from its natural environment and recast in a field-guide style that is reminiscent of the iconic bird prints of Audubon and Gould.

This “illusion of reality” gives viewers a unique emotional connection with each bird. By isolating the birds in this novel context, the character and beauty of each species are celebrated, providing a rare and detailed glimpse of these delicate creatures whilst also offering a poignant reminder of how habitat loss and climate change threaten hundreds of bird species today.
